Learning to Drive an Automatic or Manual Car: Information and Useful Links...

In order to learn to drive in Ireland you must pass a Theory Test. Before you apply for a first-time learner permit in any category, you must complete and pass the Driver Theory Test for that category.

When Can I Apply for a Theory Test
While you can sit for the Theory Test at any age, you must submit your pass certificate to the National Driver Licence Service when applying for your first learner permit. This process MUST happen within two years of passing the theory test.

The Theory Test Checks Your Knowledge of Topics Such as:
  • The Rules of the Road
  • Risk perception
  • Eco-driving
  • Hazard awareness
  • Safe driving behaviour
The test is computer-based and has been designed to be simple and intuitive to use.  You will have a chance to take a practice session on the day before the actual test.
A person who is disqualified may undergo a driving theory test in respect of the categories A-M. i.e motorcycle/moped theory test = A, A1, A2 or B-W theory test, work vehicles and tractors theory test, which is the same as the car theory test.

Persons seeking a test in the higher categories (Truck, Bus, CPC, ADI) may only undergo the test when they hold a valid driving licence in category B and they thus cannot undergo the test when disqualified. Persons who have passed the Theory Test in categories AM or BW while disqualified may subsequently have the certificate accepted if presented within the validity period and with a valid application for a learner permit. You can book an appointment to sit your driver Theory Test at one of 40 test centre locations  < (Click for locations nationwide).

To Pass The Theory Test.
You will need to get 35 answers correct out of 40 questions,  so it is not unusual for people to be unsuccessful on their first attempt. On the day of the test, you will be given a written report (if appropriate to your test) to tell you whether you passed or failed and which questions you answered incorrectly. You may apply for a new test after three days through the theorytest.ie online booking page or by calling 0818 606-106.There is no limit to the number of times you can take the theory test but a re-sitting fee is payable on each occasion and you can't get a learner permit without a Theory Test Certificate.

Once Passed Your Theory Test You May Apply for a Learners Permit.
There are 15 different licence categories covering all vehicle types and these fall into two main groups, however you as a learner driver will only be concerned with the following... cars, light van, cars, light van and trailer and works vehicles, which when passed your driving test, can be licensed for up to 10 years, subject to age and medical requirements.  Remember to legally drive a vehicle, you must hold the relevant licence or permit to learn to drive and ensure it remains valid.
